Keep Your Fence & Deck Looking New Through Every Ottawa Season

Hi, I'm the president of Fence Masters Ottawa. Over the last 20-plus years we've installed and repaired thousands of fences, decks and outdoor structures across Ottawa. I want to share a few practical maintenance tips that can add years to your investment.

Start with a spring inspection. Once the snow melts, walk your fence or deck line and look for loose boards, popped nails, leaning posts, rot at ground level, and any signs of insect damage. Catching small issues in April or May prevents expensive repairs in the fall.

Clean before you seal. Pressure-treated wood, cedar and composite all collect dirt, mildew and algae. A gentle wash with the right cleaner prepares the surface for stain or sealant. Avoid high pressure that can etch wood fibers or force water into joints.

Stain and seal on schedule. In Ottawa's climate, a quality stain or water repellent should be refreshed every two to four years depending on exposure. South-facing surfaces and decks take the most sun and usually need attention first.

Manage vegetation and drainage. Keep soil, mulch and plants away from the bottom of fence boards. Trapped moisture is the number one cause of rot. Make sure water drains away from posts and footings rather than pooling around them.

Prepare for winter. Trim back branches that could load snow or ice onto the structure. Avoid piling heavy snow against fence lines, and be careful with de-icing salts near wood and metal — they accelerate corrosion and discoloration.

Know when to call a pro. If a post is loose in the ground, boards are warping significantly, or you see widespread staining or soft spots, it's time to have an experienced crew assess it. A targeted repair is almost always cheaper than waiting until the whole section needs replacement.
